Tobacco
Help With Physical Addiction
Using tobacco can lead to real physical addiction. When you quit smoking you suffer nicotine withdrawal which makes the quiting process unpleasant for the quitter. Nicotine replacement therapy of NRT provides small amounts of nicotine without the harmful chemicals that come with cigarettes.
NRT helps with the withdrawal symptoms by reducing the cravings and symptoms which are the main reason that smokers are afraid or unable to quit. Without NRT it usually takes 8-10 tries for a smoker to quit. By reducing the symptoms with NRT smokers are more likely to be successful in quiting. NRT should not be used by pregnant women but should be used by people who have cardiovascular disease. Its benefits outweigh its risks.
NRT should begin when you stat to quit smoking. This is when it is most effective. It should not be started while you are still smoking because the effects on the body are unknown.
There are five different types of NRT approved by the FDA.
1) Nicotine Patches
Patches are places on the skin and release the nicotine through the skin in measured amounts. The smoker is weaned off nicotine over a few weeks by switching patches with progressively less amounts of nicotine. Some side effects of the patch are a skin rash, dizziness, trouble sleeping headache, and vomiting.
2)Nicotine Gum
Gum is a fast acting NRT the works through the nicotine membrane in the mouth. The gum can be used for people with sensitive skin who can't use the patch. It is also better than the patch because you can better control the amount you are getting by chewing different amounts of gum. Side effects are soar throat, bad taste, mouth soars, nausea, and racing heart beat.
3) Nasal Spray
The nasal spray is a good way to control the amount of nicotine that gets into your body. It is easily controlled and absorbed into the blood stream directly through the nose so it works the fastest out of all the replacements. Side effects include runny nose, sneezing, and coughing.
4) Inhalers
Smokers use nicotine inhalers because it is similar to smoking. It gives them the feeling of smoking without some of the side effects. It can be gradually be reduced to eliminate dependence on nicotine. Side effects include throat irritation, stomach irritation, and coughing.
5)Lozenges
The lozenges are similar to the gum in most ways. They allow a controlled dose through the mouth and can be used whenever needed. side effects include trouble sleeping, nausea, coughing, and hiccups.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer occurs in the testicles in men. It is a very rare cancer with only 9,000 cases per year reported in the US. It is most common in men between the ages of 15 and 34. It is a very treatable cancer and is easily detected.
There are a few symptoms that are associated with the cancer and can help detect it. The symptoms are a lump in a testicle, heave feeling in the scrotum, aches and pains in the abdomen, enlargements of the breasts, and drowsiness. The cancer usually only effects one testicle. The causes of the cancer are unknown but it usually starts in the germ cells in the testicle.
There are a few things that increase your risk of testicular cancer. If family members have had the cancer your risk is increased. It is also more common in white men compared wit black men. The cancer can be detected by using ultra sound or by getting a blood test.
There are two ways to treat testicular cancer. The cancer can be surgically removed. This has no ill side effects and doesn't result in sterilization. You can also get radiation therapy. This can have some ill effects. It can result in infertility but it could come back over time. There is no way to prevent testicular cancer but it can be easily detected. It can be detected easily with a self examination which can be done at any time.

Vitamin P or bioflavonoids are compounds found in ample amounts within plants. They serve in the defense and pigmentation of plants. Unlike many active plant compounds flavonoids have a low toxicity. Flavonoids are known for their anti-oxidant properties. And although have been called Vitamin P for ease, are not really vitamins.Flavonoids are helpful in the absorption of Vitamin C and are more potent when taken together. However flavonoids are absorbed poorly by the body, at only about 5% . Research has also shown that flavonoids are quickly metabolized by the body, as they are seen as foreign bodies. Therefore the newest belief is that the flavonoids do not act directly in the body, but that it is the bodies reaction against them that is beneficial, almost in the same way as a vaccination. Flavonoids can provide anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-cancer services.Flavonoids are found in most plants but the white membrane below citrus peel, as well as peppers, grapes, red wine, onions, garlic, blue and red berries, green tea and buckwheat are specifically high in them. There is little problem with deficiencies, interactions or overdoses with a decent diet, as flavonoids are common within our foods. In extreme causes an overdose of flavonoids can cause diarrhea.

Vitamin K(Phytonadione):Vitamin K is a fat soluble substance that helps blood to clot. Clotting is the process where blood cells stick together like glue at the surface of a cut. It also helps the bones develop normal structure. The bacteria in the intestines can produce its own vitamin K, but you can also get it from green leaf vegetables and some vegetable oils, cheddar cheese and mayonnaise. Vitamin E inhabits how much vitamin K the body can absorb, something that can make a person bleed abnormal. Pregnant women should be careful about taking vitamin K, as it is excreted in to breast milk, and at crosses the placenta, so the baby will get it. If you don't get enough vitamin k, you will get impaired blood clotting. It is easier for infants to get deficiencies, because they might get it from their mother when being breast-fed, and breast milk is relatively low in vitamin K.There are no real consequences to overdose, toxicity or side effects of vitamin K.Aspirin, Cholestyramine and Mineral oil laxatives are medications that can interact with vitamin K.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine, pyridoxal phosphate)...Performs as a coenzyme (which is a small organic but non-protein molecule that carries a chemical group between enzymes) and affects the body’s use of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. It helps convert tryptophan (which is an essential amino acid that's involved in human nutrition) to niacin (which is most important to functions in the production of energy from the body’s blood sugar. It is also necessary to the production of fats in the human body. Niacin is also essential for correct functioning of the nervous system) It may be found in meat, fish, eggs, milk, and whole grain foods. This vitamin promotes healthy cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems. Supports healthy hair, skin and normal red-blood-cell development. Assists in the creation of food energy and possible anemia treatment. It functions as a tranquilizer, it's important for healthy nerve and muscle functioning, blood cholesterol may decrease, reduction of PMS symptoms, it may reduce asthma symptoms and increases levels of serotonin to ease sleep.Vitamin B6 may be found in Avocados, Bananas, Beef liver, Chicken, Fortified cereals, Ground beef, Ham, Hazelnuts, Potatoes, Salmon, Shrimp, Soybeans, Sunflower seeds, Tuna and Wheat germ Suggested amounts:-Men: 1.3 mg-Men (Over 50): 1.7 mg-Women: 1.3 mg-Women (Over 50): 1.5 mg-Pregnancy: 1.9 mg-Lactation: 2.0 mg

Thiamine, also called vitamin B1, is used in many different body functions. A very little amount of this vitamin is actually stored in the body. Thiamine is a very important vitamin, if somebody who is suffering from beriberi injects thiamine into there body, then they will be on their feet within a matter of hours. It also plays a role in helping circulation. It helps the blood formation and the metabolism of carbohydrates. It is also required for the health of the nervous system, and is used in the bio synthesis of a number of call constituents. Females should consume 1.0 mg per day, and males should consume 1.4 mg a day. Death in Thia min is very uncommon, although long-term amounts of larger than 3 grams have been known to cause toxicity. This vitamin should be taken with the B group vitamins and manganese. It is proven that thiamine can be useful for motion sickness in air and sea travel, and that this vitamin also repels insects when excreted through the skin.

Peach: A peach is a fruit in the Rosaceae family that comes from a Chinese tree with the same name. The fruit is a drupe(a stone fruit) with a big, rough stone in the middle with a fleshy substance around it. Peaches can be pink, yellow, red or white, or a combination, and the skin is fussy and dull. The peach is a good source for vitamin A and C, Dietary Fiber, Niacin and Potassium, and has little of saturated fat, cholesterol or sodium. Peaches are often used for jam, because it can only be stored for 1-3 days fresh, and they are mostly peeled before eaten. Peaches are ideal for maintaining optimum health and weight loss.

Apples-Apple's are traditionally used in the treatment for weight loss, fingernails, bowel stimulator, arthritis, indigestion, gout, and many other things as well. Apple's are a very good source for chlorine, copper, iron, magnesium, sulfur, vitamin c, vitamin a, biotin, vitamin b-1, sodium, and pectin. The best kind of apple for you to juice with are one's that are hard and nice and firm. You should really try to avoid apple's that are bruised. Some people feel that you can juice with the seeds of an apple, and on the other hand some people also feel that you shouldn't juice your apple with the seeds. I feel that you should take out the seeds when you are juicing, because the seeds contain cyanide. The best kind of apples for you to buy would have to be the organic apple's. This type of apple does not have the wax that they put on some types. Apple's also offer a lot of amino acids.

Tomatoes...Eating tomatoes has many health benefits. They contain compounds that have been proven to help prevent cancer, heart disease, cataracts and much more. Tomatoes were never eaten in the U.S. until the early 1800's because they are considered part of the deadly nightshade family. The deadly nightshade family were considered toxic and caused many things like appendicitis, cancer and "brain fever". But now people know that they are safe to eat and may do just the opposite. They contain a large amount of vitamin C (40% of the daily value), 15% of daily value for vitamin A, 8% of potassium, 7% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron for women and 10% RDA for men. The compound I talked about in the beginning appears to act as an antioxidant which neutralizing free radicals that may damage cells in the body. Harvard's studies have discovered that men who consume 10 servings of tomatoes a week (which is the equivalent to 10 slices of pizza) can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 45%.

Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) , is know as the "anti-stress vitamin", it is part of the B group of vitamins, it is a water-soluble vitamin. This nutrient can be made in the body by the intestinal flora. B-5 is very important to the secretion of hormones, these hormones assist the body with metabolism, help with allergies, and beneficial to the nerves, skin, and muscles. a daily dosage, would be 10mg. its not really toxic, but to much can give you diarrhea, digestive disturbances and water retention. B-5 can be found in: beef, brewer’s yeast, eggs, fresh vegetables, kidney, legumes, liver, mushrooms, nuts, pork, royal jelly, saltwater fish, torula yeast, whole rye flour, and whole wheat.

Vitamin D is created when exposed to the sun or eating certain foods. You may get a lot of Vitamin D from various plants, egg yolk and fish oil. You cannot get Vitamin D overdose from just being out in the sun but if you eat to much food that contains a lot of Vitamin D then there are problems that include rickets, bowing of you bones or severe liver disease.

Italian researchers discovered that those who consume more than 7 servings of raw tomatoes lower the risk of developing rectal, colon, or stomach cancers by 60%.

Fruit Project 9/20
There are a few things that can count as a cup of fruit. I cup of fruit counts as a cup along with 1/2 cup of 100% fruit juice, or ½ cup of dries fruit. Some specifics are 1 banana, 16 seedless grapes, 1 orange or 16 melon balls of watermelon.
Fruits have a lot of health benefits. Having a diet rich in fruit can reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, and some forms of cancer like mouth stomach or colon cancer. Because some fruits are rich in fiber eating them could reduce the risk of heart disease. Eating fruits can be part of a low calorie diet because fruits have low amounts of calories per cup compared with some other foods.
Fruits also contain large amounts of nutrients. Many fruits are low in fats and none have cholesterol. Fruits are important sources of potassium as well as dietary fiber and vitamin c. Potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Potassium is found in bananas, prunes and pears. Fiber helps maintain or reduce blood pressure levels and can be found in most whole fruits. Vitamin C helps repair body tissue and heal wounds.
There are some easy tips for eating fruits. Keep in season fruits on the counter and in the refrigerator so you always have fruits on hand. Eat whole fruits and 100% fruit juice. At breakfast top your food with fresh fruit, pack a fruit with lunch, and have coleslaw or pineapple at dinner. Add dips or dressing to frits to make them more appealing or add applesauce instead of oils when baking a cake. Keep fruit safe by cleaning it before you eat it and keep it separate from raw meat.

Juicing Project
My Juice is strawberry kiwi juice. The recipe consists of 1 kiwi and i handful pf strawberries but for our juice I will increase the amounts of each. Strawberries are used for preventing acne, kidney disease, weight loss and constipation. Kiwis are used for preventing scurvy. Kiwis are a good source of vitamin c while strawberries are a good source of calcium, iron and vitamin c. This juice should be very tasty.

9/6/o7What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a health lifestyle?
Juicing is the drinking of fruit and vegetable juices. Juicing adds many essential nutrients that would not otherwise be digested if not for juicing. It adds many micro nutrients as well as vitamins and minerals. Juicing also helps in a absorption of those nutrients because the juice is predigested by the juicer and is easier for your body to absorb. Juicing can also aid in weight loss. Juice is low in calories and has no fat. It can take the place of other foods that would be less healthy in a balanced diet. Vegetable juices can even help stabilize blood sugar levels because they are low in sugar.
Today 9/10/07 I started off the day by unplugging the fan to much commotion from the teacher. After that we finished watching the juicing lady video and taking notes on it. After that we looked at the bigger group project and my group decided who was doing what part of the project.
